The Rising Threat of Romance Scams

In the world of online romance, everything may not always be what it seems. Behind the allure of finding companionship lies a sinister trend that has seen a sharp rise: romance scams. As we delve into the intricacies of these schemes, it becomes evident that they not only prey on emotional vulnerabilities but also exact a heavy toll on victims’ financial well-being. In 2023, the incidence of romance scams surged by over a fifth, painting a stark picture of the growing allure of this insidious form of fraud for criminals.

What is a Romance Scam?

A Romance Scam involves criminals feigning romantic intentions towards a victim, gaining their affection, and then using that goodwill to commit fraud against them. Fraudsters deploy fake social media profiles adorned with stolen or Ai generated photos to ensnare unsuspecting individuals. Their tactics involve protracted periods of grooming, during which victims are gradually drawn into a web of lies and false promises.

One of the hallmarks of romance scams is the reluctance of perpetrators to engage in face-to-face meetings or video calls. Instead, they craft elaborate excuses while subtly soliciting money from their victims under the guise of familial emergencies, unpaid bills, or the need for travel expenses to meet in person. The emotional toll inflicted by these scams is significant, causing victims to suffer from psychological distress, eroding their trust, confidence, and sense of security.

A growing trend

Analysis published in the Financial Times by Lloyds Bank reveal a concerning upward trend: 2023 saw a 22 percent increase in reported cases compared to the previous year. Surprisingly, while men accounted for slightly more cases, it is women who tend to bear the brunt of financial losses, averaging £9,083 compared to £5,145 for men. The age group most susceptible to these schemes is individuals aged 55 to 64, witnessing a staggering 49 percent rise in cases since 2022. Moreover, those aged 65 to 74 tend to suffer the highest monetary losses, averaging £13,123 per victim.

Romance related fraud is becoming a common ploy for fraudsters, and victims often find themselves emotionally and financially drained by the convincing tactics of scammers. A common tactic is approaches on social media requesting financial or personal information. The growth of this category of Automated Push Payment fraud underscores the need for proactive measures to safeguard against such threats. As banks enhance security measures the perpetrators are adjusting their approach and it is now common to see a shift to smaller, high-volume transactions rather than bigger one-off payments that are easier to detect.
