Having qualified as a solicitor in 1998 (Real Estate, SJ Berwin), he became an equity partner at Womble Bond Dickinson before pivoting away from traditional private practice in 2012 to join The Legal Director (TLD), then a boutique start-up.
At TLD, James played a pivotal role in scaling the business from a handful of lawyers to a team of nearly 50, contributing to its growth from £0.6m to over £7m in revenue. He built and led a high-performing recruitment function that became central to the company’s success. His transition from legal advisory work to operational leadership reflects his deep understanding of what makes lawyers thrive in modern, flexible legal environments.
